Coaching is only effective when invited.

Have you ever offered ‘free advice’ to someone you knew who was not receptive to it in the first place? Maybe you’ve said something like..” Hey, let me give you a little free advice”. That of course instantly gets the eyes rolling and the listening device shut down tighter than tight. The key to effective coaching is wanting to be coached. If I, a 20 handicap, were to offer coaching to Tiger Woods on his golf game, what do you suppose his reaction would be? Yup, you’re right. “Not interested but thank you very much Mr Sollom.” First off, I have no business suggesting I could offer coaching on his golf game, but maybe there are other areas of his business or organizational life I might be of some help. (Tiger if you’re reading this and you want my assistance, go to my contact page and give me a shout. First session is free) Again the key here is for the person being coached to be open and willing to be coached. Otherwise, it’s just free advice. And we all know how much that is worth.
